Welcome!
The training on these pages was developed for workers in family violence shelters in Nunavut, NWT and Yukon after a year of consultation with shelter workers across the three territories in 2021.
Northern shelter workers faced barriers to training: online training written at an academic level rather than plain language; lack of access to enough in-person training; training that didn’t reflect northern and Indigenous realities and perspectives.
Shelter workers told us what training they wanted and needed. We developed in-person and online training by interviewing over 20 northern shelter workers and persons involved in First Nations, Inuit and Métis organizations in the territories. Clips from these interviews appear in the training videos and the in-person training slides. We also licensed artwork from Indigenous women artists from the three territories for use in this training project. This training can be accessed for free by video by anyone. Many of the topic areas also contain a participant’s training handbook and a list of resources.
The YWCA NWT chairs the pan-territorial network of women’s shelters. It found funds for and oversaw the development of the training, with the input of the pan-territorial network and Indigenous project advisors. Some parts of the training are still under development, pending finding further funds.
See below for training topics and resources.
