Safe homes are similar to family violence shelters but they generally operate in communities that don’t have easy access to large family violence shelters.

You and your children can stay short-term at a safe home if you are fleeing violence. They may be in a house, apartment, hotel room, or a room in a family’s home. Currently, there are safe homes located in Fort Simpson and Fort Good Hope.

Shelters provide a short-term, safe place to stay away from your abuser while you determine next steps.

Trained shelter staff can provide emotional support, crisis intervention and advocate on your behalf. They can also assist with connecting you to other services, such as counselling, legal advice, housing, childcare or income support.

24/7 ACROSS THE NWT

Family violence shelters are emergency shelters open to all self-identifying women, with or without children, who are experiencing violence and want a safe place to stay. They are free, confidential, and accessible 24/7 across the NWT.
